What is a percentage?

A percentage expresses a quantity per hundred. For example, 20% means 20 out of every 100, or 0.20 as a decimal multiplier.

Three common percentage calculations

This calculator separates finding a percentage of a number, finding what percent a part is of a whole, and finding the whole when the part and percentage are known.

Formulas

P% of N = P ÷ 100 × N. For 20% of 150, multiply 0.20 by 150 to get 30.

Part as % of whole = Part ÷ Whole × 100. If 30 is the part and 150 is the whole, the result is 20%.

Whole = Part ÷ (P ÷ 100). If 30 is 20% of an unknown whole, that whole is 150.

Worked example

15% of 80 is 12. If 12 is compared with a whole of 80, it is 15%. If 12 represents 15% of an unknown whole, that whole is 80. Percentages can exceed 100%: 125% of 40 is 50.
