What does this calculator do?

This final grade calculator projects the course grade you would finish with if your current grade stays fixed for the completed portion and you earn the expected average you enter for all remaining work.

Use it when you are asking “What will my final grade be?” and you already know, or can reasonably estimate, your average on the work that is still ungraded. Formula

The projected final grade is the weighted contribution from completed work plus the weighted contribution from remaining work:

Final grade = Current grade × (Completed weight ÷ 100) + Expected remaining grade × (Remaining weight ÷ 100)

Because the remaining weight is 100 − completed weight, the same formula can be written as:

F = (C × W + R × (100 − W)) ÷ 100

The calculator keeps full numerical precision during the calculation and rounds only the displayed values to at most two decimal places.

Worked example

Suppose your current grade is 82%, 70% of the course is complete, and you expect a 92% average on the remaining work. The remaining course weight is 30%.

The completed work contributes 57.4 percentage points: 82 × 0.70 = 57.4. The remaining work contributes 27.6 percentage points: 92 × 0.30 = 27.6. Adding those contributions gives a projected final grade of 85%.

How to calculate your final grade

1. Enter your current percentage grade for work that has already been evaluated.
2. Enter the real percentage of the course that completed work represents.
3. Estimate the average percentage grade you expect across everything still remaining.
4. Calculate. The result combines the two weighted contributions into one projected final course grade.

If your final exam is the only work left and it is worth 30% of the course, the completed course weight is 70%, not 30%.

Current grade vs. final grade

Your current grade is an average over the portion of the course already represented by the completed weight. Your final grade is the weighted result after both completed and remaining work are included. An 82% current grade therefore does not always mean 82 percentage points toward the final course grade; if 70% of the course is complete, it contributes 57.4 percentage points.

What if my course is already 100% complete?

When the completed course weight is 100%, no coursework remains. The projected final grade equals the current grade, and the expected grade on remaining work is not mathematically applicable. The calculator disables that field automatically in this case.

What if nothing has been graded yet?

When the completed course weight is 0%, the current grade contributes zero percentage points. The projected final grade therefore equals the expected average for the remaining 100% of the course. A current-grade value is still requested so that every input remains on the same explicit 0–100% scale.

Weighted categories and limitations

This calculation assumes that your current grade correctly summarizes performance on the work already completed, that the completed course weight is the real share of the final course grade already evaluated, and that the expected remaining grade is the average you expect across all work still outstanding.

Some learning management systems treat category weights, dropped assignments, extra credit, missing work, or ungraded items differently. For a weighted class, use the actual course weights from your syllabus or LMS rather than assuming the percentage shown beside an assignment is the same as the percentage of the whole course.

Common mistakes

• Entering the remaining weight instead of the completed course weight.
• Confusing your current grade with its weighted contribution to the final grade.
• Entering GPA values, letter grades, points, or another scale instead of percentages from 0 to 100.
• Using the expected score on one exam when several remaining assignments have different weights; in that situation, first estimate the weighted average for all remaining work.

Multiply your current grade by the completed course weight, multiply your expected remaining grade by the remaining course weight, convert both weights to decimals, and add the two contributions.

What if 100% of my course is already complete?

Your projected final grade is simply your current grade because the remaining weight is 0%.

What if none of my course has been graded yet?

The completed contribution is zero, so your projected final grade equals the average you expect over the remaining 100% of the course.

Can I use this for weighted classes?

Yes, provided the completed course weight accurately reflects the portion of the final course grade already evaluated and your expected remaining grade represents the weighted average you expect across everything still outstanding.

Is this a GPA calculator?

No. VT-002 uses a standard 0–100% percentage scale only and does not calculate GPA.

Does this work with letter grades?

No. Convert your course information to valid percentage grades only if your institution or syllabus provides an appropriate percentage basis. VT-002 does not perform letter-grade conversions.
