How Weighted Grades Work

The weighted-grade formula

A weighted grade gives each component a specified influence on the total. When weights are percentages that sum to 100%, the formula is:

Weighted grade = Σ(score × weight / 100)

The same formula can use decimal weights, such as 0.25 instead of 25%.

Worked example with percentage weights

Suppose quizzes are 20%, a project is 30% and an exam is 50%. Scores are 80%, 92% and 74%.

  • Quizzes: 80 × 0.20 = 16
  • Project: 92 × 0.30 = 27.6
  • Exam: 74 × 0.50 = 37

Total: 16 + 27.6 + 37 = 80.6%.

Percentage weights and decimal weights are equivalent

A 35% weight equals 0.35. The important point is consistency: do not divide a decimal weight by 100 again. For example, 88 × 0.35 is correct; 88 × 0.35 / 100 would make the contribution one hundred times too small.

What if the weights do not total 100%?

There are two distinct situations. First, the course rules may genuinely require a complete set of weights totaling exactly 100%; in that case, a partial list does not yet represent the final course grade. Second, you may intentionally want the weighted average of only the items entered. That requires normalization.

Normalized weighted average = Σ(score × weight) / Σ(weight)

The Weighted Average Calculator is appropriate for relative weights. Do not silently normalize a course grading scheme if the syllabus requires fixed percentage contributions.

Simple average vs weighted average

For scores 60 and 100, the simple mean is 80. If the 60 is worth 80% and the 100 is worth 20%, the weighted grade is 60 × 0.8 + 100 × 0.2 = 68. Equal averaging would therefore misrepresent the grading rule.

Common mistakes

  • Treating every score as equally important.
  • Mixing percentages and decimals in the same formula.
  • Normalizing weights when the course policy says they must total 100%.
  • Rounding each contribution too early instead of rounding the final result.
  • Confusing a weighted course grade with GPA.
