What is a weighted grade?

A weighted grade combines several course components while giving each component the share of the final grade specified by the course. A 40% final exam affects the overall result more than a 10% quiz category, even when both use the same 0–100 grading scale.

How the calculator works

Enter every component that contributes to the final course grade, its percentage grade, and its course weight. The calculator checks each value and requires the entered weights to total exactly 100% before producing a final weighted grade.

Weighted grade formula

For each component, the weighted contribution is grade × weight ÷ 100. The overall weighted grade is the sum of all component contributions.

Weighted grade = Σ(grade × weight ÷ 100)

Worked example

Suppose homework is 90% and worth 30%, a midterm is 82% and worth 30%, and a final exam is 88% and worth 40%. Their contributions are 27, 24.6, and 35.2 percentage points. Adding them gives a weighted grade of 86.8%.

Weighted vs. unweighted grade

An unweighted arithmetic mean gives every entered grade equal influence. A weighted grade instead uses the importance assigned by the course. If assignments, exams, and projects have different course weights, a simple average can give the wrong overall result.

Why weights must total 100%

This tool is designed to calculate the complete final grade for a course. Requiring exactly 100% prevents a partial set of components from being silently rescaled. A total of 99.99% or 100.01% is reported as entered rather than treated as 100%.

Weighted categories

You can enter categories such as homework, quizzes, projects, midterms, and finals, or individual components if your syllabus assigns each one a direct share of the course. Use the weights that actually determine the final grade; do not substitute the number of assignments for the category weight.

Common mistakes

• Entering category weights that do not add to exactly 100%.
• Using raw assignment points instead of percentage grades.
