How to calculate a test score

A test score percentage compares the number of questions answered correctly with the total number of questions. This calculation is appropriate when every question counts equally.

Test score formula

Test score = correct answers ÷ total questions × 100

The number of incorrect answers is total questions − correct answers.

Worked example

If you answer 42 questions correctly on a 50-question test, 42 ÷ 50 × 100 gives a test score of 84%. The remaining 8 questions are incorrect.

Correct vs. incorrect answers

The calculator reports both counts so the result is easy to verify. Correct and incorrect answers always add back to the entered total when every question is either right or wrong.

Why letter grades vary

An 84% score might correspond to different letter grades in different classes or institutions. This tool therefore reports the percentage only and does not assign A, B, C, D, or F automatically.

Tests with different point values

This calculator assumes each question has equal value. If questions award different numbers of points, use points earned divided by points possible instead of counting correct questions.

• Entering incorrect answers instead of correct answers.
• Including bonus questions inconsistently in the total.
• Using decimal values even though questions are discrete.
